Stewart brings a wealth of experience to the Board of Meridiem Investment Partners Limited. He was the Founder and Chairman of Newton Investment Management which he ran from 1977 to 2002. In 2003, he became Chairman and Founding Partner of The Real Return Group Limited, which subsequently merged with Veritas Investment Management AG in 2004.
He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Touche Ross in 1963 and then spent five years with Greenwells as an investment analyst. Prior to setting up Newton Investment Management, Stewart was a director and fund manager at Ivory & Sime, Edinburgh.
Stewart has held a number of board level roles over the course of his career, including as Non-Executive Director of HSBC Holdings plc, as a Council Member of Imperial College, as the Chairman of the committee advising the Council on the Endowment Fund, as a Director of The Herald Investment Trust plc, and as a board member of VenCap (Channel Islands) Ltd. He has also been active on the Investment Committee of The Wellcome Trust and the Investment Board of Cambridge University and is an investor in private healthcare and technology companies in the UK. He was President of the National Trust for Jersey 2020-2023.
Alongside his business interests, Stewart has a keen interest in Sport and was Director and President of England Hockey 2002- 2004. In 2013, Stewart was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from industry body PAM, recognising his contributions to the wealth management industry.
